THE INTERNAL LAWS OF LOVE AND MONEY
We have looked at external threats to wealth such as taxes, con artists, breakups, and long-term care costs. There are also internal forces at work that can powerfully determine whether we attract and build wealth or repel itâeven before the evil outsiders can try to take it away.
Before embarking upon a love contract or any other legal planning, I believe it is important to do some internal work in the form of a âsolo love contractâ (SLC) to increase our capacity to build and keep wealth while simultaneously removing obstacles in its path. The solo love contract resembles a New Yearâs resolution but produces more effective results by utilizing an actual contract process. It may seem odd at first to enter into a contract with oneself. Think about it, thoughâwhose actions are we more able to directly influence and control than our own? By learning how to effectively manage ourselves and commit, in writing, to doing so, we can powerfully ensure that our efforts will directly boost our personal wealth-building power.
Thus far, we have seen many examples of people compromising their future personal security and happiness because they agreed to something they shouldnât have. A common theme running through each bad decision is that every person who was âhadâ was not dealing from a position of power. They all either lacked sufficient knowledge to properly evaluate and anticipate the consequences of their actions, or their power was low as a result of a recent loss or other personal roadblock. No one should enter into any business dealing or personal collaboration when operating from a position of weakness. What kinds of decisions do we make when we lack sufficient knowledge about the subject at hand or when we are paralyzed by roadblocks such as stress and low self-esteem?
In this section, we will seek to identify some common wealth-sabotaging attitudes and behaviors. I will then present strategies that Iâve successfully adopted to combat these roadblocks and to generally get out of my own way. The strategies that have worked for me may or may not work for you. They are presented for the purpose of getting you to think about what might work for you.
Are You a Money Magnet or a Wealth Repellant?
Disagreements over money issues are among the top causes of all breakups. They are also a leading cause of stress in nonromantic relationships. Before dealing with money problems and/or goals within a relationship, I believe we all need to periodically evaluate our solo financial lives. I always try to incorporate one or two financial goals into each SLC. It is hypocritical and counterproductive to comment on my partnerâs financial decisions without first ensuring that my own house is in order.
A healthy relationship with money is, in my opinion, more important than simply having a lot of money. Earning tons of money or being wealthy is often the result of happenstance. I can think of more than one megacelebrity whose stratospheric level of fame baffles me.
